Worth Every Penny?: Peter Thomas Roth Acne Spot and Area Treatment

Friday, August 12, 2011

If you've been reading my blog for a while now, you'll know that I suffer from cystic acne of the severest form. Huge, red, inflamed, unpoppable devils are all over my face, no matter what medication my dermatologist prescribes me. This is a pretty constant thing in my life, but there are weeks when it'll be better and then it'll get worse--there's no rhyme or reason to how I get this type of acne, as far as I can tell.

Since I've pretty much given up on my dermatologist, I was wandering around the skincare section of Sephora a few weeks ago looking for something intensive that would hopefully diminish some of my acne. The nice saleslady pointed me to the Peter Thomas Roth Blemish Buffer Kit (link here). The brand sounded very doctor-y and official, and I liked how it wasn't just one acne treatment, but a whole bunch of skincare samples all geared towards clearing up your skin.

The face cleanser is really drying, and the exfoliant is decent, but what made the $35 kit totally worthwhile is the tiny tube of the Acne Spot and Area Treatment. Let me start by saying that this stuff is not for a small whitehead or clogged pore--it is incredibly strong, meant to fight the worst of acne. The sample contains 0.25 ounces of product and even with daily application, it's lasted me over 2 weeks. You really only need the tiniest bit of this whitish, toxic-smelling paste spread onto the broken out area.

Within two days of applying this treatment, I saw a huge difference. My acne was absolutely still there (hey, this thing's not magic!) but was much more smooth and a lot less red. That might not sound like a huge deal, but if any of you have ever had to conceal cystic acne with makeup, you'll know that redness and the textural lumpiness are the biggest challenges.

I've used it faithfully every night since then, and 2 weeks later, my once impossible to get rid of cystic acne is about 90% gone. 90%! I can't tell you what a breakthrough this is for me! I've still got the slightest bit of unevenness where the acne once was and discoloration is a bit of an issue now, but there are almost no pimples on my face. Seriously, the last time my face was this clear, I was in middle school.

I still use this on new acne that pops up every now and then, but the worst of it is almost gone and I still can't get over how amazing this stuff is! My little trial tube is nearly empty, so I'll be dropping by Sephora soon to pick up the full size.

Yes, $35 is a little high for a 1 ounce bottle of product, but again, it'll last me ages and with the results I'm seeing, I'd pay a lot more than that. As cliche as it may sound, I really think this treatment has changed my life--or at least, my face!

More Cheapie but Goodie posts coming up! Stay tuned!

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!
