Cheapie but Goodie: Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Scrunching Gel

Sunday, June 19, 2011

As someone with perpetually dry hair, heat styling is the enemy. No matter how much heat protectant I use, or how much deep conditioner I slather all over my locks, using hot tools is a surefire way to make my hair brittle.

This piece of information, along with my chronic disease known as severe laziness, means that I'm a wash-and-go type of girl. Following my haircut back in January, I had the perfect hair for such a relaxed method--my layery, shoulder-length 'do had enough texture to look interesting and enough shape to look somewhat put together.

Only that was 6 months ago, and as I'm trying to grow my mane out, my hair now looks like a wavy, confused mess that just screams...blah. (Or whispers the word in a flat monotone).

Hopefully some of you out there will know what I'm talking about--that awkward transitional phrase when you have no idea what to do with your hair and it just looks like a hot mess?

Well, that's exactly what I was trying to work through, when a miraculous Herbal Essences Curl Scrunching Gel came along and pulled me out of my ponytail rut.

I suppose the product could be used to slick back baby hairs or anything else gel is used for, but as the name suggests, it's meant to give you beautiful, unstructured waves. There are a million ways you could do it--use the gel to scrunch damp hair and then put it in a bun/braid and leave it or use a blow dryer/diffuser. The first two methods are good for people whose hair won't curl very easily--you'll also want to follow the scrunching with some hairspray, if that's the case. But my hair takes shape pretty quickly, so I just put a dollop of the gel in my hands, flip over my damp hair, and then haphazardly scrunch for a few minutes. When I've finished, my hair looks really wavy, and a little messy, but in a totally summer appropriate beachy way--intentionally styled in non-fussy form.

But best of all, some magical part of this gel leaves my hair feeling like there's absolutely nothing in it! It's so light it's almost weightless, and no matter how much product I put in my hair, it never feels tacky or stiff. NEVER. Any of you who have experience with hair gel will know what a big deal that is!

I can tell you right now that this product is going to be the cornerstone of my hair styling routine this summer--it's the ultimate relaxed California girl look that everyone (myself included) wants to sport this time of year. Only instead of having to douse your hair with gunkifying, mattifying salt sprays, you can get the same effect from a cheap (around $6), fruity scented gel that couldn't make your hair hard if it tried.

I'm off to play with my hair which might look too cool to actually be mine!

Hope you all had a great weekend and a huge Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful dads in the world--and most especially to mine!
