Must-Have Travel Items: Makeup

Sunday, May 29, 2011

I've been hinting at an exciting announcement that involves some sort of trip for a while now, and here it is! In a few days, I'll be off to Zurich, and then to Paris! It's not my first time in Zurich, but although I've been to France, it will be my first excursion to Paris--weird, I know. We (my cousin and I) are staying with my grandmother in Switzerland and then going to hang out with my brother who's been studying in Paris for the last six months.

I've been feeling really restless lately, so this trip is coming at the perfect time. And, of course, it also gives me fun new ideas to post about. So this will be the first in probably a three part series of posts about the beauty products I'll be taking with me (makeup, skincare and hair stuff). This might seem like a lot of stuff, but I will be gone for a month and given the god-awful exchange rate, I'll want to bring everything I need to avoid buying it there.

**I'm aware that I haven't reviewed a lot of these products before, but my blog is still new and I honestly just haven't gotten around to it yet. But if you see something you want me to do a review on, don't hesitate to ask!**

1. The Sephora base-zero anti-shine primer: I find a primer absolutely essential for my oily skin in the heat of summer, and this one goes on smoothly and keeps my face pretty matte.
2. Maybelline Dream Mousse concealer: This product actually got discontinued, but I love it and have been using it for years. When I heard the tragic news, I hopped onto Ebay and bought 4 in my color. I'm convinced that nothing covers acne and acne scars with such a light and smooth texture--this concealer is an absolute keeper.
3. MAC Blot Powder: Some people like to use this pressed powder to touch-up any oiliness that gathers throughout the day, but I do an all-over dusting after my concealer to keep my face grease at bay.
4. Garnier Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller: Scroll down to the next post and you'll see my review of this product!
5. Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler: I've been using this amazing creation for 7 years now, and the thought of being somewhere without it is pretty much my worst nightmare. Click to see my everyday lash routine!
6. Shu Uemura Mascara Basic: To be used right after the curler, this mascara separates, defines and couldn't clump if it tried.
7. NYX Eyebrow Shaper: This is actually a pretty nifty product--a wax pencil you draw over your eyebrows to keep all the hairs in place. None of that crunchy eyebrow gel here!
8. Benefit Eye Bright: I love a multi-purpose product, so I could hardly leave home without this! This pinky, shimmery pencil serves as a brightening eyeliner when worn on the waterline, or highlighter for the brow bone, cupid's bow or any other part of the face. I like to put a little bit on the inner corners of my eyes and then blend with my fingers to make my eyes look bigger.
9. MAC Eyeshadows: In Femme Fi (limited edition), Mulch, Handwritten, and Twinks. I don't wear eyeshadow very often, but in case we go out at night or something, it's nice to know the option is there.
8. Benefit Bella Bamba blush: I like to think of this blush as a less glittery, less peachy version of the NARS Orgasm. It's super pigmented, applies like a dream and even smells like watermelon. What could be better?
9. NYX Matte Blush in Peach: On days when my acne is acting up, the shimmery quality of the Bella Bamba just attracts more attention to my pimples, so I prefer a matte finish blush. This NYX one is the prettiest natural flush color, and was only $5.99!
10. Dior Addict Lip Glow: This product was a recent splurge item for me, as a reward for finishing my finals--pathetic excuse, I know! It's basically the smoothest, most hydrating lip balm I've ever encountered with a sheer pink tint. Apparently, something in the formula has shade-adjusting properties to be the most flattering lip color for your skin tone. I don't really buy into all that but it is a really lovely berry color on me, and I'm not a huge lip gloss fan in the summer time.
11. Clean and Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets: Need I say more? These guys live in my purse year-round.
12. Essence of Beauty Travel Face Brushes Kit: Brushes are such an enormous pain to travel with, so minis that come in their own protective case are an absolute god-send. I got this set at CVS for around $13 and it has everything I need for my everyday face--powder brush, blush brush, eyelash combing thingy (does that thing have a proper name?) and even an eyeshadow brush for those special occasions. They're not the absolute best brushes I've ever tried, but they don't shed and are really easy to work with.
13. Random Lip Glosses Floating Around My Purse: Okay, fine, I lied. I don't think I could only bring one lip product with me if my life depended on it. (But if I absolutely had to--deserted island style--it would probably be the Dior one). I'm sure there will be around 3 lip glosses drowning in the depths of my purse amidst old receipts and a whole bunch of change.

Good Lord, that seems like so much written out! But I've already done a dry run and packed it all up (I wasn't kidding about being restless) and it really doesn't take up much space as they're small products. To some of you, this might sound like I'm bringing half a Sephora, and others will probably be wondering how I can live with such little makeup. Tell me which team you belong to in the comments section!

Oh, and just in case any of you were afraid I would neglect my blog during my trip--don't worry! I've got just about everything sorted out, which I'll explain in a later post. I could never leave you guys hanging after you've been kind enough to read the crap I spew!
